WHY DO YOU NEED A MARINE SURVEY  ?

Pre- Purchase Surveys, Valuations for insurance or finance. Boat Safety Certificates. Marine accident investigations and damage assessments etc. These are just a few of the many services offered by EMS that fall under the general heading of – marine survey. In its simplest term a marine survey can best be described as a fact finding project having something to do with ships, yachts or boats.

When any boat owner / buyer / agent needs to make an informed decision regarding such as purchase, insurance, finance an appraisal or boat survey is carried out to determine the crafts structural condition and value. When a power boat, sail boat or workboat is damaged, a marine surveyor assesses the extent of damage, the possible causes and the consequential loss.

Boat surveyors are trained professionals whom act as your eyes, ears and agent / advisor in any assessment, survey, contractual situation or accident investigation. He is someone who makes sure that accurate information is gathered professionally, efficiently and impartially.

  TYPES OF MARINE SURVEY INCLUDE:

•   Pre-Purchase Survey & Valuation (if required)

Pre-purchase surveys (all materials wood GRP steel) are recommended to protect your investment in a boat. Marine surveys are usually required at the setting up of a new insurance policy and thereafter at regular intervals.

•   Marine Accident Investigations

The marine surveyor can ascertain as necessary the possible extent of the damage, produce expert reports, provide specialist advice and estimated costs of repair - plus oversee any repair work as necessary

•   Diesel Engine Inspection & Propulsion Solutions

As yacht surveyors (not technical engineers) we visually inspect engines, gearboxes and generator installations during our inspections, and by arrangement the engine is run up to access its general running characteristics, vibration levels, etc. No dismantling of the engine or associated equipment is carried out within the scope of a condition survey so no detailed comment upon the internal parts is possible.

In motor boats and power boats where engines form a substantial part of the total vessel value, propulsion engines should be surveyed by an approved marine engineer, both statically and under load. Running under sustained load (smoke production) is recommended to assess the engine condition without opening it up.

On power boats we strongly recommend lubricating oil analysis. This can help to determine internal condition and in conjunction with the other tests we carry out, offers the best means of assessing your engine without stripping it down.

Engine Trials: Upon client's instruction static or sea / river trials are conducted by arrangement where the engine's overall performance and operation can be assessed - the engine is run up to access its general operational characteristics, vibration levels, cooling water flow etc - this service is usually subject to a small additional fee

  Specialist Advice

You may not need a full report - just some advice, expert opinion or guidance on a particular problem or assistance with such as a disputed account from a repairer or boat builder etc.

You may need advice in support of threatened or proposed litigation - EMS can talk for you.

European Marine will provide verbal or written advice - no matter how small the issue

Are you worried about wood - dry / wet rot, GRP osmosis or steel (rust) corrosion ?

Non Destructive Testing (NDT)
European Marine use specialist digital moisture meters (Skipper) that can penetrate laminates, GRP glass reinforced plastics and timber. The Skipper moisture meter uses sophisticated RFE electronics to both search and then measure moisture levels - we are then able to locate areas of concern before they become a problem requiring an expensive solution.

Non Destructive Testing Dye Penetrant method of inspection is a non destructive test for defects open to the surface. It may be used on such materials as aluminium, magnesium, brass, copper, cast iron, steel, stainless steel, carbides, certain plastics and ceramics.

We also offer an NDT sail boat rigging test / inspection procedure utilising an electronic test meter.

For steel hulls European Marine use the TM 8811 ultrasonic thickness gauges that are designed to operate with a range of probes to detect hull plating thickness, wastage from rust (both inside and out) including surfaces not able to be seen

Materials include: Steel, Cast Iron, aluminium, phosphor bronze, copper, brass, zinc, glass and some fibre-glass / epoxy composites. Thickness Range 1.5mm - 200mm
